MONDAY, OCTOBER 21
“Let not your hearts be troubled. Believe in God; believe also in Me. In My Father’s house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to Myself, that where I am you may be also.”
John 14:1-3 (ESV)
WHAT IS HEAVEN?
Author Unknown- The carpenter I hired to help me restore an old farmhouse had just finished a rough first day on the job. A flat tire made him lose an hour of work, his electric saw quit and now his ancient pickup truck refused to start.
While I drove him home, he sat in stony silence. Upon arriving, he invited me in to meet his family. As we walked toward the front door, he paused briefly at a small tree, touching the tips of the branches with both hands.
When he opened the door, he underwent an amazing transformation. His tanned face was wreathed in smiles; he hugged his two small children and gave his wife a kiss. Afterward he walked me to the car. We passed the tree and my curiosity got the better of me. I asked him about what I had seen him do earlier.
“Oh, that’s my trouble tree,” he replied. “I know I can’t help having troubles on the job, but one thing for sure, troubles don’t belong in the house with my wife and the children. So I just hang them up on the tree every night when I come home. Then in the morning I pick them up again. “Funny thing is,” he smiled, “when I come out in the morning to pick ’em up, there ain’t nearly as many as I remember hanging up the night before.”
In John 14, Jesus is talking to people with troubled hearts. One of the reasons they were troubled was because Jesus had just told them He was leaving. He then reassures their troubled hearts by telling them about heaven. Jesus intended for the hope of heaven to be a tree that they could hang their troubles on.
We all have troubles in life. The question is what do we do with those troubles. Ultimately, Jesus wants His followers to be encouraged with the promise of eternity in heaven. This week we will review some of the lessons Pastor Mike shared about heaven this past Sunday. In the meantime, if you had a trouble tree outside of the door to your house what would you hang on that tree? Talk to God about those worries today and ask Him how the promise of heaven can help with your perspective.
