“If we love our Christian brothers and sisters, it proves that we have passed from death to life.”
1 John 3:14 (NLT2)
LOVING PEOPLE DIFFERENT THAN ME IS OUTWARD PROOF OF AN INWARD CHANGE
Years ago, there was a well-known salesman that regularly competed with the number one company in his industry. Those competing against him from the big company would regularly tout how big they were and how small his company was. His response was always, “If size were everything, elephants would rule the world and Miss America would weigh 400 pounds!”
On Sunday we were reminded that 1 John teaches that one of the proofs that we are Christians is our love for others. John uses the powerful picture of passing from death to life to describe the dramatic change and power of the change God brings. Ephesians 2:1-2 puts it this way, “And you were dead in the trespasses and sins in which you once walked, following the course of this world, following the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that is now at work in the sons of disobedience.”
A spiritually dead man can’t do anything. But if you’re a Christian, God has made you alive and given you the ability to love people who may not be like you. Reflect on the difference you think Christ is making in your daily walk and how you see people who aren’t like you.
Ask God to lead you to someone not like you today and show you a way you can show them God’s love.
