“If someone has enough money to live well and sees a brother or sister in need but shows no compassion—how can God’s love be in that person?”
1 John 3:17 (NLT2)
MY LOVE WILL BE MORE THAN A FEELING
Finding his newly-appointed pastor standing at his study window in the church weeping as he looked over the inner city’s tragic conditions, a layman sought to console him: “Don’t worry. After you’ve been here a while, you’ll get used to it.” Responded the minister, “Yes, I know. That’s why I am crying.” (David DeWitt in “Is Jesus Still Weeping?)”
The word used for “compassion” in 1 John 3:17 comes from combining two words. One word means “to be moved” and the second word means “our intestines.” It’s literally to be moved in your gut. This is the picture of seeing someone’s needs and being moved deeply. The problem with some is they see a need and have the resources to help with the need but aren’t moved to the point of actually helping.
God’s love leads to a compassion that moves us into action. As a church we are partnering with Samaritan’s Purse as a way of putting our love into action. This is one way you can put your love into action. Visit northstarchurch.org/biggive for more details on how you can help.
Thank God for supplying all your needs. Thank God for wanting to use you to show His love to others in tangible ways. Pray for the kids who will be touched by Samaritan’s Purse shoe boxes this year.
