1 John 5:1–3 (ESV): 5 Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ has been born of God, and everyone who loves the Father loves whoever has been born of him. 2 By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God and obey his commandments. 3 For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments. And his commandments are not burdensome.

 1 John 5:1-3

Love in Obedience

We see in this passage that John is getting at the heart of what it means to love God and how we functionally love God! John starts in verse 1, where he says that whoever believes that Jesus is the Christ (Christ being Jesus title of Messiah or Chosen one, it is NOT his last name) then you’ve been born of God, that you know Him! In fact, if you love God then you will love people (verse 2).

Verse 3 really hammers home John’s main point: If we truly love God, then we do what he says. If we love God, then we will obey his commandments. I think that last phrase is so important, “his commandments are not burdensome”. Just imagine a backpack that is full of bricks that you have to carry around with you as you go. John is clear to state that God’s word is not like a burdensome backpack but instead it is something that sets us free. That God in His word is not trying to rip you off but he is trying to set you free!

So if you’re asking yourself “Do I love God”? The answer is found in verse 3, do you keep his commandments? I love that the greek construction for “keep his commandments” could be literally translated as “keep on keeping his commandments” that our obedience to God is not a one-time exchange but a continual submission to His will and way.

Do you feel like God’s word is burdensome? Why?

Our Father,

Thank you for your Word. We pray that by your Spirit, 1 John 5:1-3 would change us into the likeness of Christ. We ask for the Spirit’s help today to obey your commandments. We thank you that your word is not burdenson. We thank you that your word does not try to hold us back but it sets us free. May we embrace and embody your word today, Lord! We pray these in your name by the power of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
