WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 14

29 Jesus answered, “The most important is, ‘Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. 30 And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’ 31 The second is this: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no other commandment greater than these.”

Mark 12:29-31

Love People

This passage is known as “The Great Commandment”, which states that God’s people are to love God and are to love people. We talked earlier this week about verse 29 and how we are called to love God personally, comprehensively, and wholeheartedly. Today, we are going to focus on verse 31, which states that you shall love your neighbor as yourself. Or said another way, you shall love people.

We all know that we should love people and it is so easy for us to say those words without considering the full weight of them. When we really consider every person that we will interact with today in every circumstance we have been commanded by God to love them as we would love ourselves. This requires us to put ourselves in their shoes for all those different circumstances, whether it be merging in traffic, picking up our kids from the car line, or that heated meeting at the office, and ask the question, “how would I want to be treated?” This is the call to love people.

The command to love God is inseparable from the command to love people. If we truly and rightly love God then we will be nature love people. And likewise, if we truly and rightly love people then we will love God. And this is why it is known as the Great Commandment.

Which component of the Great Commandment is most challenging to you? Why?

Prayer

Our Father,

Thank you for your Word. We pray that by your Spirit, Mark 12:29-31 would change us into the likeness of Christ. We ask for the Spirit’s help to embody this great commandment. May we be a people who are marked by a deep love for God and a tangible love for people. We pray that you would rid us of selfish and small lives so that we may embrace a life of love of God and people. We pray this in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Amen.
