“If we say we have not sinned, we make Him a liar, and His word is not in us.”
1 John 1:8 (ESV)
GETTING STARTED WITH GOD: I AM A SINNER AND SEPARATED FROM GOD
In the book, The Day America Told the Truth, of the people surveyed, the authors found these results: 91 percent of American lie about trivial matters; 36 percent of Americans lie about important matters; 86 percent regularly lie to parents, 75 percent regularly lie to friends, 73 percent regularly lie to siblings, and 69 percent regularly lie to spouses.
1 John adds if you say that you’re not a sinner then you are calling God a liar. One of the myths Mike unpacked on Sunday was: Most people are basically good at the core. Yet, 1 John 1:8 along with the rest of Scripture clearly teaches that we are all sinners in need of God’s grace. And like we learned yesterday, once we receive God’s saving grace a transformation process begins and our life will begin to change.
In Matthew 5:17-30 Jesus was talking to self righteous religious leaders who did not think they needed God’s grace. Jesus explained that God’s standard is sinless perfection and even sin in your heart makes you guilty. Take some time and read Matthew 5:17-30. Thank God for His offer of salvation and forgiveness by grace. If you haven’t realized your need for grace and never accepted it, accept it now.
