FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 2
15 If a brother or sister is poorly clothed and lacking in daily food, 16 and one of you says to them, “Go in peace, be warmed and filled,” without giving them the things needed for the body, what good is that? 17 So also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead.
A Living Faith
This passage highlights that true faith is a living and active faith. That a workless faith is a worthless faith; it is unproductive, sterile, dead! This week we’ve traveled through different scriptures that have highlighted the importance of loving our neighbors. James 2 illustrates the inverse that a faith that does not act is no faith at all!
Think about it this way, someone claims that a dead body has been raised to life but the body does not move, there are no vital signs, no heartbeat, no pulse…it is still dead. The claims of life are silenced by the evidence that the body is still dead. In the same way, the words of our faith mean little compared to the actions of our faith. If we do not have a spiritual heartbeat, if we do not have a spiritual pulse, then our faith is in fact dead.
Love talked about is easily forgotten. Love experienced is unforgettable.
This is the passage that the Lord in His Kindness used to wake me up to a life of following Jesus. That my faith means nothing if I am not truly following Jesus. That faith that is not accompanied by action is dead!
What is one way you can put your faith in action today? Be specific.
Thank you for your Word. We pray that by your Spirit, James 2:17 would change us into the likeness of Christ. Lord, we pray you would rescue us from a dead, workless faith. Keep us away from just talking about things, instead of doing them. We pray that our faith would be lived out more than it is talked about. We need you, Lord! We pray these in the your name by the power of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
