29 So the city was filled with the confusion, and they rushed together into the theater, dragging with them Gaius and Aristarchus, Macedonians who were Paul’s companions in travel. 30 But when Paul wished to go in among the crowd, the disciples would not let him. 31 And even some of the Asiarchs, who were friends of his, sent to him and were urging him not to venture into the theater.

Acts 19:29-31

I love how this passage highlights Paul’s heart for the gospel and people! We’ve seen earlier in chapter 19 that Paul is in Ephesus persuading those who have given themselves to idol worship to repent. The challenge is that the economy of this region is built off this idol worship, so many are furious. We now see the impact of this, as the city is beginning to riot and they rush into the community theatre for an unofficial town meeting and tensions are high as they have dragged two of Paul’s companions into the theatre. Likely, his companions will be beaten or potentially killed.

I find Paul’s response to this fascinating. Paul does not shy away from the danger and the threats, but we are told in verse 30 that Paul wished to go in among the crowd! Paul was ready to defend his God, the gospel, and to stand amongst friends. Paul was not hiding from the fight; he was ready to pick a fight!

Thankfully, Paul had some additional friends who kept him from entering the theatre and thus losing his life. What we see from this text is that Paul is passionate about the gospel and people.

The questions this text asks of us is are we willing and ready to defend the Gospel and stand amongst friends when the tensions are high? Are we willing to sacrifice it all for the good news of Jesus Christ?

How do you think you would have responded if you were in Paul’s shoes? Why?

Our Father,

Thank you for your Word. We pray that by your Spirit, Acts 19:29-31 would change us into the likeness of Christ. We pray that by the strengthening of Your Spirit we would be ready to defend and stand with the Gospel. We ask that you would continue to grow in us a faith that is unshaken by circumstances or trouble. We rely on you alone, Lord!  We pray all these things in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.  Amen.
