And the twelve summoned the full number of the disciples and said, “It is not right that we should give up preaching the word of God to serve tables.
Therefore, brothers, pick out from among you seven men of good repute, full of the Spirit and of wisdom, whom we will appoint to this duty.
Acts 6:2-4 (ESV)
GOSPEL UNITY: A PASSION TO SERVE
William Booth once had an audience with King Edward VII of England. His Majesty highly commended the salvationist for his unflagging zeal and wonderful work among the poor. How revealing was Booth’s reply to the King’s glowing words! He said, “Your Majesty, some men’s passion is for art. Some men’s passion is for fame. My passion is for souls.” (Aubrey Vaughan)
When the Apostles realized they needed help serving the widow and needs of the congregation, they had to find the right people. The men they selected had a good reputation, they were full of the Spirit of God, and they were full of wisdom. The Life Application Bible says, “Finding qualified people who can and will help share the load of work is a mark of a healthy congregation.”
When you are full of God’s Spirit, you are full of passion and power. To do God’s Word we need both passion and power. As you think about where you are serving or where you could serve, what areas of ministry are you passionate about? That might be where God is shaping you to serve.
Thank God for the passions He has given you. Ask God to show you where He wants you to use those passions.
