FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 30
32 And now I commend you to God and to the word of his grace, which is able to build you up and to give you the inheritance among all those who are sanctified. 33 I coveted no one’s silver or gold or apparel. 34 You yourselves know that these hands ministered to my necessities and to those who were with me. 35 In all things I have shown you that by working hard in this way we must help the weak and remember the words of the Lord Jesus, how he himself said, ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’ ”
Word of His Grace
This passage is Paul’s closing remarks of his farewell address to the elders at Ephesus. It’s interesting that he closes his remarks by saying I now commend you to God into the word of His grace. It’s almost as though Paul is handing them over to God, which they’ve always belonged to God but he’s transferring responsibility to them by handing them over to God and to the Word of His grace.
This is significant because Paul was their founding pastor, Paul was their leader, Paul was the one they could look to for humility, he was the one they could look to for courage, and now Paul is leaving. I love that it says that the word of his grace is able to build you up and to give you the inheritance among all those who are sanctified, who are those that are sanctified they’re previous followers of Jesus who have become more and more like Jesus. That the Word of God will be enough to build you up in all God has called you to be!
Paul gives him the secret sauce which is the Word of this grace but he is also conferring unto them this mantle of the faith. That it is now time for you to take responsibility for the torch of the faith.
As followers of Jesus today and in 2022 for whatever reason God has seen it fit to give us this moment in history! Just as it was the elders in Ephesus’ turn to take the torch of the faith in to run with it it is also our turn to take the torch of the faith in the place in space that God has placed us. May we run well!
Take time to consider that God has given YOU this moment in history to influence your community.
Thank you for your Word. We pray that by your Spirit, Acts 20:32-35 would change us into the likeness of Christ. We pray for the courage to take hold of the torch of faith and to run well. We ask that we would look to the word of grace as our guide as we are built up into the people you have called us to be! We pray all these things in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Amen.
