FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 4
“He will wipe every tear from their eyes, and there will be no more death or sorrow or crying or pain. All these things are gone forever.”
Revelation 21:4 (NLT2)
I asked the children in my Sunday school class, “If I sold my house and my car, had a big garage sale, and gave all my money to the church, would that get me into heaven?” “NO!” the children all answered. “If I cleaned the church every day, mowed the yard, and kept everything neat and tidy, would that get me into heaven?” Again the answer was, “NO!” “Well, then, if I was kind to animals and gave candy to all the children and loved my wife, would that get me into heaven?” I asked them again. Once more they all answered, “NO!” “Well,” I continued, thinking they were a good bit more theologically sophisticated than I had given them credit for, “then how can I get into heaven?” A five-year-old boy shouted out, “You gotta be dead!”
Kids are often much smarter than we give them credit for. As we wrapped up this series, we were reminded that heaven one day will be our eternal home. In heaven there will be no more death, sorrow, crying or pain. All of the things that give us heartache in life will be gone forever. All of those things in some ways are the result of living in a sinful and fallen world. In heaven there will be no sin because of the work of Jesus.
It’s hard for us to imagine forever. And it’s hard for us to imagine life with no pain. But God has promised both for those who put their faith in Jesus and repent of their sins. If you’ve done that then you can know one day your pain will be gone forever. Talk to God about any pain in your life. Thank God that one day it will all be gone!
