MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 5
24 “Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock. 25 And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on the rock. 26 And everyone who hears these words of mine and does not do them will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand. 27 And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell, and great was the fall of it.”
This passage marks the conclusion of Jesus most famous sermon, the Sermon on the Mount. Jesus presented two options to His listeners, who were now responsible for what they had just heard. Jesus illustrates these options by telling of two builders, one who builds his house on the rock and the other who builds his house on the sand. These builders represent the one who hears the words of Jesus and does them and the one who hears the words of Jesus and does not do them. Jesus goes on to say as the storms beat against both houses, one falls with a crash and the other stands firm. I think it is important to note that storms hit both homes…but the one that is marked by obedience to the Word of Christ stands.
So when it comes to your life what is the foundation that you are building on? When it comes to your relationships, money, career, parenting, morality…what is the foundation of these decisions? The person and work of Jesus or something else? The teachings of Jesus are not meant to be admired but to be obeyed.
Here is the temptation…we can make Jesus one of many pillars in our life without making him the foundation…He is one of the support structures but he is not the rock on which our lives are built. Don’t settle for making Jesus a part of your life and not make Him the foundation of your life!
Today…may we hear the Word of Christ and respond in obedience.
If you’re honest with yourself, what are you building your life on?
Thank you for your Word. We pray that by your Spirit, Matthew 7:24-27 would change us into the likeness of Christ. We pray that today we would hear and obey the Word of Christ, that we would make Him and Him alone the foundation of our lives. I ask God that you would rescue us from the mistake of making Jesus one of the various pillars of our lives without making Him the central foundation. We acknowledge you today as the source and sustainer of everyone and everything. We pray these in the your name by the power of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
