12 For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.
The Living Word
This passage highlights the dynamic nature of the Word of God. The Word of God is not a passive, lifeless book. It is living and active. The Greek word for ACTIVE used here is energes (ἐνεργὴς ), where we get the English word energy. It carries the emphasis of being at work, active, and effective. The word of God is energetic! But what work does the Word of God do? Verse 12 tells us that the word is sharp and that it cuts discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart!
Hebrew 4:12 paints the picture of a surgeon who is yielding a bright light and a sharp scalpel. As the Word of God is read, it shines a bright light into the crevices of our hearts that reveal our motivations and intentions. Yet the word not only exposes what is there but it removes that which has no place. It pierces our hearts and divides us between what is pure and what is sin. Our great physician uses the Scriptures to work on us, to ultimately transform us into the image of Jesus Christ.
The temptation is to just read our bibles but never let our bibles read us. The danger is to accumulate knowledge of the bible without letting this living and active book do its effective work in our hearts.
Today, as you read the Scriptures, allow for the living and active Word of god to have its effect in your heart and in your life!
When you think about reading the Bible what holds you back? Why?
Thank you for your Word. We pray that by your Spirit, Hebrews 4:12 would change us into the likeness of Christ. Thank you that you have revealed yourself to us through your Word. We pray that we would be people of your Book. That we would allow for the scripture to do its energetic work in our hearts! Rescue us from knowledge accumulation without heart transformation. We need you, Lord! We pray these in the name of your Son by the power of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
