16 All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, 17 that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.

2 Timothy 3:16-17

2 Timothy 3:16 is one of the foundational scriptures that shines a light on the nature and function of God’s Word. Scholars refer to this as the “Doctrine of Inspiration”.  First, we see its nature, in verse 16 which says all scripture is breathed out by God, it is “God-Breathed”, the Greek word is literally “breath of god”. A great theologian once said, God has spoken to us and he has not stuttered. Every word in the Bible is from God through the pen of man for us! Second, we see its function, that it is profitable for teaching, reproof, correction, and training in righteousness! The Word of God does a work in us that we would be complete, equipped for every good work.

The Bible is the primary way that God has revealed Himself to us and it is the primary tool the Holy Spirit uses to make us more like Jesus.

There are so many things that compete with our attention and ultimately our affection. A W Tozer put it “Whatever keeps me from my Bible is my enemy, however harmless it may appear to me.” We need to read and study the Word of God like our lives depend on it because it does.

What is your plan for Bible reading? What is your time? Where is your place? What is your plan?

Our Father,

Thank you for your Word. We pray that by your Spirit, 2 Timothy 3:16-17 would change us into the likeness of Christ. We look today at your God-Breathed, perfect, errorless Word and rejoice. We thank you that you have made yourself known, you have made your plans known, that we can come to saving faith in your son Jesus. We ask that we would throw off any distraction that would keep us from your word that we would rejoice more and more in your written word! Make us people of your word, Lord!   We pray this in the name of Jesus by the power of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
