22 But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. 23 For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man who looks intently at his natural face in a mirror. 24 For he looks at himself and goes away and at once forgets what he was like. 25 But the one who looks into the perfect law, the law of liberty, and perseveres, being no hearer who forgets but a doer who acts, he will be blessed in his doing.

James 1:22-25

A Living Faith

This passage is foundational in our understanding of what we are meant to do when we hear the Word of God. It states it explicitly in verse 22 that we are to be doers of the word and not simply hearers of it! I love that this text is not just calling us to do something but to become somebody. The greek construction for “be doers” is in fact “becoming doers of the Word”, that is it is something that we grow into it is someone that we become! We are not to be like a man who looks into a mirror and forgets what he looks like but instead we put into practice what we have heard. God does not desire that we would become smarter sinners but that we would be transformed into the image of Jesus Christ.

Imagine a husband and a wife are having a conversation and the wife lovingly says, “The trash is full”. Her intentions are pure here, but she is not interested in simply letting her husband know that there is not enough surface area left in the trash can but instead she wants him to do something with this information! In a similar way, God has spoken to us not for the sake of information but for transformation!

May we receive the word of God and become doers of the word!

What is one practical way to become a doer of the Word today?

Our Father,

Thank you for your Word. We pray that by your Spirit, James 1:22-25 would change us into the likeness of Christ. We do pray that by the power of your HOly Spirit that we would not just be hearers of the word but we would be doers of the word. May we never settle for information accumulation but may live in action! We pray these in the your name by the power of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
