Sermon Based Group Homework

For the message on November 29, 2020
Passage: John 1:1-13; 20:19-22

This Sunday, our College Pastor, Sellers, delivered a powerful message on being a light for Jesus to our world.

Looking back at your notes from Sunday’s message, was there anything you heard for the first time, caught your attention, or challenged you?

In the message, Sellers talked about a participation trophy he got in fifth grade. What trophy, medal, or award have you received that you are most proud of?

1. On Sunday, Sellers described the manner in which we become children of God. He reminded us that we don’t receive Christ by family status, morality, or good deeds. The only way we are able to receive Christ is by grace through faith. What do the following verses tell you about how people come to faith in Christ?

John 17:20 (NLT2)
(Jesus)  “I am praying not only for these disciples but also for all who will ever believe in me through their message.

John 6:44 (NLT2)
For no one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws them to me, and at the last day I will raise them up.

Romans 10:17 (NLT2)
So faith comes from hearing, that is, hearing the Good News about Christ.

  • Not only does God use our light (Christlike character, conduct, and words) to bring non-believers into His kingdom, He also must open hearts to His truth through the Spirit. How did you come to faith in Christ? Who influenced you and how did the Spirit open your heart to the gospel?

2.  In the message, Sellers reminded us that Jesus called us light in a dark world. What do the following verses tell us about the source of light (all that is Christlike) in His followers?

2 Corinthians 4:6 (ESV)
For God, who said, “Let light shine out of darkness,” has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.

John 8:12 (ESV)
Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”

  • Does your life stand out (in a good way) around others who don’t follow Jesus? If so, can you give an example?
  • What needs to change to make your life brighter (more attractive) to non followers of Jesus?

3.Sellers also encouraged us to be the church by telling others about Jesus or inviting them to watch our Christmas Eve service online. What insight do the following passages provide when it comes to being an effective witness for Jesus?

1 Peter 3:15-16 (NLT2)
15  Instead, you must worship Christ as Lord of your life. And if someone asks about your Christian hope, always be ready to explain it. 16  But do this in a gentle and respectful way. Keep your conscience clear. Then if people speak against you, they will be ashamed when they see what a good life you live because you belong to Christ.

Matthew 5:15-16 (NLT2)
15  No one lights a lamp and then puts it under a basket. Instead, a lamp is placed on a stand, where it gives light to everyone in the house. 16  In the same way, let your good deeds shine out for all to see, so that everyone will praise your heavenly Father.

  • What keeps you from being more open about your faith in Jesus with non believers?
  • Who needs to hear from you this week about your faith in Jesus or be invited to watch NorthStar’s online Christmas Eve service?

1. What is your biggest takeaway from this sermon and study?
