“This was because Ezra had determined to study and obey the Law of the Lord and to teach those decrees and regulations to the people of Israel.”
I’ve heard it said there are two greatest days in a persons life: the day you were born—and the day you discover why you were born.
Like you, I come in contact with many people whose birthday shows up on my social media feed daily. It notifies their friends and followers that it’s their birthday. Indeed, it’s a special day!
However, I often think to myself, “This individual clearly knows today is their birthday—however do they know ‘Why’ they were born? Do they know ‘What’ they were called to do in life? Do they have a clearly defined mission?”
Billy Graham was born to evangelize. General Patton was born to lead. Mike Trout was born to be an impact major league baseball player. Bill Gates was born to create Microsoft. Steve Jobs was born to start Apple.
George Washington was born to be the first United States President. On and on we could go.
Ezra had an interesting name. His name means “Help.” Listen closely, Ezra devoted himself to the truth of scripture. He did three things. Read it for yourself again in the verse above.
- He devoted himself to study the scripture.
- He devoted himself to obey the scripture.
- He devoted himself to teach the scripture to the people of Israel.
Ezra was born to “Help” the people of Israel get back on track. He clearly knew his “Why.” He knew his calling. He knew he had a clearly defined mission. He knew “Why” he was born.
For me, I like to say it like this: “I’m a minister—who happens to be a professional baseball scout.” The same would be said if I were a educator, doctor, plumber, lawyer, nurse, pilot, police officer, firefighter, coach, etc.
It is my mission to BE a disciple of Christ and BUILD more disciples of Christ in my job as a professional baseball scout.
So how about you? Do you know “Why” you were born? What is your purpose? What is your calling? When you know, it will become one of the greatest days of your life.
God has a special plan and purpose for your life. Search for it like hidden treasure. Maybe surround yourself with a mentor who can help you discover it. When you find it, it will not only impact your life—it will impact countless others in and around your life.
