“But John tried to talk Him out of it. “I am the one who needs to be baptized by you,” he said, “so why are you coming to me?” But Jesus said, “It should be done, for we must carry out all that God requires. “So John agreed to baptize Him.”
In 1986 while playing in the NY Mets organization, I received in the mail a Major League spring training non-roster invite with the Big League club. Yes, that World Series Championship team, NY Mets. It would be my first of six Major League spring trainings. Walking in the locker room in 1986 and seeing my jersey hung up next to some of the great players of that era was special. If I’m honest, I was a bit “Awestruck.” Have you ever been “awestruck” in the presence of greatness? Maybe it was a POTUS or Musician or Athlete or Actor or Actress. How did it make you feel? How did you respond? Were you in awe? Were you star struck?
John the Baptist was the forerunner to the Messiah, Jesus Christ. Observe the scene: there was a long line of people waiting to be baptized by John. Then it happened. Jesus showed up, walking down into the water. John was not in the presence of the above mentioned “celebrities.” Oh No! John was in the presence of Almighty God wrapped in human flesh. The Creator of the universe. The Alpha and Omega. The One, who by His very word spoke the world into existence and parted the Red Sea. John was awe struck!
Look at John’s response: “But John tried to talk Him out of it. “I am the one who needs to be baptized by you.”
Then the humble, gracious, compassionate response by Jesus: “It should be done, for [we] must carry out all that God requires.”
Did you catch it? Don’t miss it! The King of Kings and the Lord of Lords included a simpleton, John the Baptist, to accomplish the plan of God by using one word, “We.”
Today, this very day, God wants to include you in His plan to redeem mankind and change the world. With all of your failures, mistakes and mishaps, God wants to use you. Don’t underestimate it. You are a part of His “We” team to impact and influence those around you every single day. You are His hands and feet. There is no plan B. So don’t be “awestruck” when you come into the presence of greatness—unless you’re in the presence of Jesus Christ, the Son of the Living God.
