“Now it happened after a while that the brook dried up”…
1 Kings 17:7
Have you ever been in a desert environment? It’s dry, parched and barren. No rain has fallen for days or even weeks. It can be a miserable place to pitch a tent and camp out.
The same can be said when life seemingly comes grinding to a halt: A sudden job loss. A downsizing company. A bitter divorce. The death of a child. The loss of a parent, love one or close friend. A relationship once thriving, now lying in ruins.
During these dry and barren times it appears like God has gone silent. Nothing. Quiet. You felt sure you would hear God’s quiet voice during these barren times in life, but nothing! This is exactly what happened to the prophet Elijah. God told him to go East to a brook called Cherith and wait. There He would provide food for him morning and evening, and he could drink water from the flowing Brook.
Then it happened—the Brook dried up! No more water, no more food and no clear direction. Only a time of waiting and waiting and waiting. Have you ever been there? Have you ever experienced a time in your life where God was silent and seemed so distant? I have, and it’s not a fun place to be.
Waiting, waiting, and more waiting. Allow me to encourage you, during these waiting times God is working. Oh yes! You may not see Him or even hear Him; however He is working. The truth is, He never stops working! He is writing your story and it’s vital that you don’t steal His pen. He is doing something in you—in order to do something through you.
Listen closely: God cares more about your character and your conduct than your comfort—and during those times of waiting He is sanding, sifting, molding and shaping you into who He wants you to be. He is opening doors, maneuvering pieces into place that no man can shut or disrupt. Trust Him! His plan and His purpose is greater than yours.
Don’t quit. Don’t throw in the towel. Don’t roll over. Don’t give up. Don’t act on emotions. Never forget, when you can’t trace God’s hand, trust His heart!
