“A disciple is not above his teacher, but everyone when he is fully trained will be like his teacher.”
Being involved in Major League Baseball the past 37 years as a former player and current scout, I have literally seen thousands of hitters and pitchers. What’s interesting, is that every one of these athletes identifies with a certain pitching coach or hitting coach in their baseball career – one they connect with at a deeper level and believe in what they are teaching them.
These pitchers and hitters spend countless hours, days, weeks, months and even years working with this particular coach on the field, in the bullpen, in a hitting cage, watching video, going over pitching mechanics or hitting mechanics. In the end, they become a “Fully Trained Disciple” of their particular pitching coach or hitting coach.
The same can be said regarding a person who is serious about their walk with God and their spiritual life. To be a “Fully Trained” disciple of Jesus Christ one must spend time with a Him. I’m always reminded, the word L.O.V.E. is really spelled, T.I.M.E.
As a Christ follower this person [intentionally] put themselves in environments of growth. They prioritize large group and small group spiritual growth environments of worship, bibles studies, discipleship training and prayer time with other like minded believers. They seek out an accountability partner and allows that person to speak loving truth in their life and hold them accountable. They are open to the right kind of authority and leadership in their life that will help shepherd them as they grow in their walk with God.
Their desire is to be a “Fully Trained” disciple of Jesus Christ. Not a 1/4, 1/2 or 3/4 trained … but “Fully Trained.” Jesus says in the verse above this person, when “Fully Trained” will be “Like His Teacher.”
Much like the Apostle Paul said in 1 Corinthians 11:1 “Follow me, as I follow the example of Christ,” their character and their conduct will be like the Master Teacher, Jesus Christ.
If you want to grow in your spiritual life and become a “Fully Trained Disciple,” I encourage you to pay the price, by surrounding yourself with an authentic leader and a small group of like minded Christ followers who have one goal in common; and that is to [Be] and [Build] disciples of Jesus Christ. You won’t regret it.
