New Life in God’s Economy
I was recently on a cross-country flight for work, and I had one of those bulkhead seats that was so close to first class you could just taste it. I could see the food they were eating, the TV screens they had, those big comfy seats, and just a sense of comfort that all of us who were squished in economy didn’t have. Just about as quickly as I could take in what I could see but couldn’t have, the flight attendant closed that curtain on me and further separated us from them. An airliner is one of the few places anymore where you can legitimately see and feel the separation between us.
That got me thinking about God. In the Old Testament, people felt like they were in economy all the time while certain people were sitting in first class. They couldn’t eat their food, stand around them, or use their lavatory. When Jesus came, he literally tore the veil between classes. Jesus came to make the earth one big Southwest Airlines flight where everyone can pick their seat and the first class/economy class has been eradicated. When you follow Jesus, you become one big family with other believers all over the world.
When you decide to make Jesus Christ your Lord and Savior, know that He eliminates the system of class based on what you’ve done, how much you make, or how important you are. In fact, Matthew 20:16 says, “So the last will be first, and the first last.”
The next time you’re on a flight where there’s first class and economy class, don’t feel bad eating the pretzels and mini cup of soda while others dine in comfort. Remember that Jesus came to change all of that. An important Bible verse comes from 1 Corinthians 1:10. It says, “I appeal to you, brothers and sisters, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree with one another in what you say and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be perfectly united in mind and thought.”
