Don’t Waste Your Sufferings
by Jason Romano
I have been blessed to host the Sports Spectrum podcast where we get to interview interesting people on the intersection of sports and faith. Recently, I interviewed Orlando Magic Senior Vice President Pat Williams. Pat’s somewhat of a legend in the basketball world, having worked over 50 years in the NBA. The man has written 110 books. ONE HUNDRED AND TEN! He’s a cancer survivor and a father to 19 children. NINETEEN! The man is a true gem.
One of the questions I asked him in our interview a few days ago prompted him to provide an answer that I thought I would share here for you. It inspired me, it encouraged me, and I believe it will do the same for you as well.
JASON: “What is the greatest lesson that you’ve learned in your 50 plus years in sports?”
PAT: “Don’t waste your sufferings. I think that would be it. Because in sports, or in life, we’re going to have setbacks. We’re going to have heartache. We’re going to have death in our families. We’re going to have job loss. We’re going to have divorce. We’re going to have cancer diagnosis. I have had all of them. But my point is, through those tough times, that’s when we really grow. That’s when we really advance. That’s when God teaches us. We’re clinging to Him because there’s nowhere else to turn. When everything is going great, when we’re winning, winning titles, books are selling out, I don’t think we learn a lot. We become very self sufficient. But boy when the floodgates hit, and they do to everyone of us, that’s the time we grow. We don’t want to waste those times. We want to be students during those hard times. This isn’t going to last forever but on the other side, how do you want me to be different? How do you want me to be able to help people on the other side because I’ve gone through it? I think that’s the most important lesson I’ve learned.”
I’m pinning this quote on my wall. I hope you will too.
Have a great week.
