The Narrow Gate
by Jason Romano
Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it.
This verse is one that I had heard even before I started going to church and reading my Bible.
Be yourself. Be different. Do you. Go your own way. Don’t do what everyone else is doing.
These were things that I heard as a kid when I had desired to pursue a career in broadcasting and sports. I was different. At 17 years old, I would rather watch a basketball game, study the players and keep the stats instead of going out, partying, drinking and doing what all the “cool” kids were doing.
I wanted to be liked, and fit in, but instead, I chose what I wanted and at that time, it was sports, sports and more sports.
Thankfully, I turned that sports obsession into a career both at ESPN and now at Sports Spectrum.
But that narrow gate that I chose regarding sports became a real thing when it came to my life.
I made a choice in 2001 to get serious about my faith and begin a walk with God that I still am grateful I have today. I’ve made a choice to walk through the narrow gate. There are many people that think the faith I have is excessive or a bit much for them. I get it. And I will never force my faith on anyone. But the older I get, the more I realize that Jesus’ words in Matthew 7 are more and more pertinent to my life.
I want to approach each day through the narrow gate that leads to life.
Will I fall? YES.
Will I mess up? YES
Will I sometimes find myself on that wide and broad road? YES
But thankfully, when I turn back to through the narrow gate, Jesus is there waiting.
This week, consider entering the narrow gate that leads to life. I promise you won’t regret it.
Have a great week!
