4 Now as we have many parts in one body, and all the parts do not have the same function, 5 in the same way we who are many are one body in Christ and individually members of one another. 6 According to the grace given to us, we have different gifts... - Romans 12:4-6a

Tap Into Your Strengths (Romans 12:4-6a)

Today we pick back up in Romans 12, as Paul describes the many gifts that believers are given, but there is only one body.

The body is one of the primary metaphors used in Scripture to describe the community of faith. This metaphor is helpful because everyone has a body and understands how it functions together! Paul states in verse 4, "Now as we have many parts in one body, and all the parts do not have the same function." Paul is speaking to the physical body here. We understand that our bodies are made up of various parts: arms, legs, fingers, feet, back, neck, head, eyes, nose, etc. We also understand that all of these parts do not have the same function. We do not try to walk with our noses or see with our fingers. Each part has a function that serves the body as a whole.

In verse 5, Paul pulls the metaphor together as he states, "In the same way we who are many are one body in Christ and individually member of one another. According to the grace given to us, we have different gifts". Paul is painting the picture that followers of Jesus, you and me, are many but we are one body in Christ. Yet, as we are one body, we all have individual functions. Some of us may be "the fingers" "the eyes" or "the legs."

Each of us has a role to play that serves the body as a whole.

The first half of verse 6 tells us that "According to the grace given to us, we have different gifts..." We have been entrusted with God-given abilities for spiritual service! Additionally, this text is emphasizing that these gifts are from God and for God. Grace is translated from the Greek word "charis" (χάρις) the word "gifts" is translated from the Greek word "charismata" (χαρίσματα). The gifts given by God are literally "Grace Gifts." These gifts are not from the self, they are from God. Further these gifts are not to be used for selfish gain, but for the good of the body and the glory of God!

This passage invites us to exercise our God-given grace gifts for the benefit of the Body of Christ. Today, how could you tap into your strengths to serve God's people?
