37 Then he said to his disciples, “The harvest is abundant, but the workers are few. 38 Therefore, pray to the Lord of the harvest to send out workers into his harvest.” -- Matthew 9:37-38

The Lord of the Harvest  (Matthew 9:37-38)

This week, Mike continued our GAME CHANGERS series, where we investigated how to make a difference in our community and in the world for Christ.

Matthew 9:37-38 describes Jesus' response to the crowd's "helpless" condition as one without a shepherd. He shifts the metaphor from the flock of sheep to a field of grain. He states that the harvest is plentiful but the workers are few. Jesus then tells his disciples to pray to the Lord of the Harvest to send out workers into His harvest.

What Jesus is doing here is envisioning a vast crop of ripe grain that is abundant and to be reaped. Jesus is stating that the world is full of unreached people who have never heard and received the good news of the Kingdom. Further, the reason why these people have not been reached is not because "christianity is narrow-minded" or because they "had a bad church experience," or because "the Bible is outdated".

Instead, its because there aren't enough laborers.

So, the disciples are to pray that the Lord of the Harvest (God the Father) would send out workers into his harvest. So the two big questions for you and me today:

  1. Are we laboring in God's harvest?
  2. Are we praying for more workers to be sent into the harvest?

We, as Christ's ambassadors in this world, are to be working to harvest. We are called to labor in God's field, for God's people, and ultimately, for God's glory. Brothers and Sisters, may we labor well and pray that God would send more workers into his harvest.
