6 The LORD passed in front of him and proclaimed:
The LORD — the LORD is a compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger and abounding in faithful love and truth, 7 maintaining faithful love to a thousand generations, forgiving iniquity, rebellion, and sin. But he will not leave the guilty unpunished, bringing the consequences of the fathers’ iniquity on the children and grandchildren to the third and fourth generation.
Exodus 34:6-7
Who is the LORD? (Exodus 34:6-7)
This week at NorthStar we continued our "Questions God Asks" series as we looked at God's question in Jonah 4:4, "Is it right for you to be angry?" On Sunday, Mike spent time unpacking The Kind of God We Have. Exodus 34:6-7 is a beautiful passage in which the LORD God self-discloses who he is. Specifically, whenever your Bible has L-O-R-D in all caps, it is a translation of God's personal name YAHWEH. This is YAHWEH disclosing himself as the one true and living God.
The LORD is:
- Compassionate
- Gracious
- Slow to anger
- Abounding in faithful love
- Abounding in truth
- Maintains faithful love
- Forgiving iniquity, rebellion, and sin
- Punishes the guilty
Throughout the narrative of Scripture and history, you will see consistency in this character. From Genesis to Revelation we see God as all of these characteristics. God is unchangeable in His power and perfection, His goodness and glory, His wisdom Justice and truth. The good news for us today is that God was not just consistent in the Bible, but he is consistent in our lives. We can bank our lives and our eternity on the fact that The Lord is compassionate, gracious, slow to anger, abounding in faithful love, abounding in truth, maintains faithful love, forgives iniquity, rebellion, and sin, and punishes the guilty. This is who God is.We, his creation, were made to know him, love him, and live with him forever. We were made to enjoy God and his presence forever.
