34 The eunuch said to Philip, “I ask you, who is the prophet saying this about — himself or someone else? ” 35 Philip proceeded to tell him the good news about Jesus, beginning with that Scripture. -- Acts 8:34-35
Is it about someone else?
The Ethiopian Eunuch asks Philip a profound question regarding Isaiah 53: "Who is this prophet saying this about -- himself or someone else?"
This genuine question about who the promised suffering servant would be prompts Philip to respond with: The someone else is Jesus. It is important for us to know today that ALL SCRIPTURE centers on Jesus Christ in his person and his work. Here is a breakdown of how the whole Bible is about Jesus:
- Old Testament: Anticipation of Jesus's Coming
- Gospels: Manifestation of Jesus's glory
- Acts: Proclamation about Jesus's resurrection
- Letters: Explanation of Jesus's teachings
- Revelation: Consummation of Jesus's promises
So even this passage from Isaiah 53 points Philip and the Ethiopian Eunuch to the person and work of Jesus Christ. I love how the text says in verse 35 that, "Philip proceeded to tell him the good news about Jesus, beginning with that Scripture." Philip took the opportunity not to just answer a spiritual question but to share the greatest news in the world -- that the person and work of Jesus Christ offers great hope and life for sinners like you and me. As we read our Bibles day by day may we look for Jesus in the pages and when we find him, may we rejoice that he has given himself totally to us and made a way for us to experience life to the full!
