34 For there was not a needy person among them because all those who owned lands or houses sold them, brought the proceeds of what was sold, 35 and laid them at the apostles’ feet. This was then distributed to each person as any had need. 36 Joseph, a Levite from Cyprus by birth, the one the apostles called Barnabas (which is translated Son of Encouragement), 37 sold a field he owned, brought the money, and laid it at the apostles’ feet.

Acts 4:34-37

Barnabas: Son of Encouragement

This Sunday at NorthStar, we continued our sermon series, ECHOES: Stories Worth Retelling, where we look at characters in Scripture who played a role in God's redemptive plan.

This week, we will dig deeper into the life of Barnabas, as recorded in Acts 4:34-37, Acts 9:26-27, Acts 11:20-24.

Barnabas (Βαρναβᾶς) is translated "Son of Encouragement." Barnabas is the nickname given by the apostles to Joseph, who was a prominent member of the early church. What a compelling nickname to give to a member of the church! What do you think your church would nickname you? (or maybe don't ;) ) Regardless, Encouragement (paraklesis - παράκλησις) is used throughout the Bible to describe:

  • The act of emboldening another in belief or course of action
  • lifting another's spirit
  • To bring comfort or consolation.

So, Barnabas is the "Son of emboldening others in faith in Jesus Christ." Barnabas is the "Son of lifting another's spirit." Barnabas is the "Son of bringing comfort and consolation".Verse 37 tells us that Barnabas sold a field that he owned and brought the profit from the sale and laid it at the apostles' feet for the work of the Church. Barnabas through his act emboldens the apostles and lifts their spirits. Maybe you do not have a field to sell, but we all can be encouragers.Paul David Tripp states that we should encourage people in three aspects:

1.) The PRESENCE OF CHRIST: Christ is WITH US.2.) The PROMISES OF CHRIST: connect the transforming promises of Christ to their everyday life.3) Their POTENTIAL IN CHRIST: Our help and hope in trouble never rest on the shoulders of our wisdom, strength, or character. When we see Christ with us, we realize that we have more than ourselves to rely on.

Today, make a deliberate effort to encourage someone. It could be as simple as a text message or as beautiful as reminding them that Jesus Christ is with them today. Let's embolden one another, let's lift one another's spirits, let's bring comfort and consolation.
