13 Jesus said, “Everyone who drinks from this water will get thirsty again. 14 But whoever drinks from the water that I will give him will never get thirsty again. In fact, the water I will give him will become a well of water springing up in him for eternal life.”15 “Sir,” the woman said to him, “give me this water so that I won’t get thirsty and come here to draw water.”

John 4:13-15

Never Thirst Again

In verses 13-14 Jesus unveils more details about this "living water." A few specifics given include:

  • Jesus is the one who gives the living water. (v.14a)
  • Whoever drinks of the living water will never thirst again. (v.14b)
  • This water will spring up into eternal life. (v.14c)

This is a picture of contextualizing the gospel. Jesus met this woman while she is drawing water at the well, and he uses this as a picture to describe the salvation that comes by grace through faith in Christ. Unlike the hard work of drawing water out of a physical well, this living water will become a spiritual well of water springing up into Eternal life. Jesus is describing the work of the Holy Spirit to "spring" someone unto salvation.Further, this principle of living water applies to the reality that no one can ever satisfy the thirst of the soul with what the world has to offer. Whether it is wealth, pleasure, power, prominence, or fame - they all leave the soul thirsty. The only source that satisfies is the Living Water that is offered to us by Christ alone.Once we taste the Living Water, it should not be expected that we cease thirsting for other things. Rather, it means that our eternal thirst for acceptance before a Holy God has been quenched. As a result, we long daily for the sweet mercy of this living water to touch the lips of our hearts.Psalm 42:1-2 states this,As a deer longs for flowing streams,so I long for you, God.2 I thirst for God, the living God.When can I come and appear before God?May we long to drink of his water that satisfies the deepest longings of our hearts.P.S. Below is a beautiful song rooted in Psalm 42, which sings about the truth of the "Living Water."https://open.spotify.com/track/5CJ67qnqLDrjdNDRZLqVIr?si=8cec45abe0904a83
