14 How, then, can they call on him they have not believed in? And how can they believe without hearing about him? And how can they hear without a preacher? 15 And how can they preach unless they are sent? As it is written: How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news. -- Romans 10:14-15
Those Who Bring Good News (Romans 10:14-15)
This week, Mike continued our GAME CHANGERS series, where we investigated how to make a difference in our community and in the world for Christ.
As we have discussed this week, it is the role and responsibility of every Christian to do the work of ministry. Romans 10:14-15, our passage for today, asks some poignant rhetorical questions about our role and the consequences of our rejection to this task.
Paul asks the Romans:
- "How can they call on Jesus that they have not believed in?"
- "How can they believe without hearing about Jesus?"
- "And how can they hear without a preacher?"
- "And how can they preach unless they are sent?"
All of the questions mentioned by Paul here are to be met with: "They can't." If not one is sent, then no one can preach. If not one preaches, no one will hear. If not one hears, then no one can believe. And if no one can believe, the no one can call upon the name of Jesus.
Paul is magnifying how crucial it is that as followers of Jesus we live sent. If we do not go through our lives sent by the Lord, then no one will ever call upon the name of Jesus.
Paul works through the logical progression of someone calling upon the name of Jesus to be saved (Romans 10:9).
Believer Sent --> Believer Preaches --> Unbeliever Hears --> Unbeliever Believes--> Believer Calls upon Jesus Christ. --> New believer SENT
Paul then closes his sequence of questioning with this quotation of Isaiah 52:7, "how beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news".
Sisters and brothers, how beautiful are your feet
