“So don’t worry about these things, saying, ‘What will we eat? What will we drink? What will we wear?’ These things dominate the thoughts of unbelievers, but your heavenly Father already knows all your needs.”
Matthew 6:31-32
Recently I read the story about a very nervous airline passenger who began pacing the terminal when bad weather delayed his flight. During his walk, he came across a life insurance machine. It offered $100,000 in the event of an untimely death aboard his flight. The policy was just $3.00. He looked out the window at the threatening clouds and thought of his family at home. For that price it was foolish not to buy, so he took out the coverage. As time passed he looked for a place to eat. Airports now carry a good variety of eateries, so he settled on his favorite, Chinese. It was a relaxing meal until he opened his fortune cookie. It read, “Your recent investment will pay big dividends.”Jesus reminds us in the verses above not to worry. As a matter of fact, He reminds us in Matthew chapter 6 that it is He who feeds, provides and takes care of the birds, not one of them falls from the sky without Him knowing about it. How much more valuable are we to our Heavenly Father? Worry can and will paralyze us. It will keep us bound up and unproductive for the Kingdom of God. So what is the antidote? What specific action step can we take to put worry in it’s place? Jesus makes it very clear in Matthew 6:33:“Seek the Kingdom of God first, above all else, and live righteously, and He will give you everything you need.”Did you catch it? God will provide all that you need - not all that you ‘want’ - but all that you ‘need.’ He knows what you need and when you need it. He simply requires that we put Him first above everything else and live our life in a way that honors Him. Here is a reminder: God is rarely early, never late, but always right on time. Stop wringing your hands in worry and trust the One who will provide for you. Worry never robs tomorrow of its sorrow; it only saps today of its joy. Leave a life of worry behind. When you can’t trace God’s hand—trust His heart.Be Worth Being,KevinSUBSCRIBE TO "OVER THE HUMP" DEVOTIONALKevin Burrell has worked in professional baseball as both a player and MLB scout for the past 39 years, and currently serves as an area scouting supervisor.
