Don't Look Back

“Then the Lord rained down fire and burning sulfur from the sky on the city of Sodom and Gomorrah. But Lot’s wife (looked back) as she was following behind him, and she turned into a pillar of salt.”

Genesis 19:24, 26

Let’s be honest—most of us are uncomfortable at the very thought of discomfort. We don’t like pain. We don’t like struggle. We don’t like difficulty. So we avoid these things at all costs—even at the cost of disobedience! Why do things like sexual sin, materialism, and missional apathy plague believers in the American Church today? The truth is we adore our fleshly comforts. We want to satisfy our bodies with every carnal pleasure we crave, therefore we ignore or defy God’s command for purity and obedience. We want to gather into our laps all the shiny trinkets and toys we can get our hands on, so we ignore God’s insistence that we live contently and generously with open hands, not closed fists. We cringe at the thought of awkwardness or tension, so we choose not to speak and share the Gospel to our friends or family members whose earthly lives and eternal souls are being led down a pathway towards eternal separation from God.Lot and his family were no different. They became comfortable in their environment. The cities of Sodom and Gomorrah were over run by the cares of the world, the deceitfulness of riches and the self-gratifying lust of material and sexual pleasure. It was morally bankrupt. God had enough and He sent two angels to send warnings of impending doom and destruction. They warned Lot and his family to flee the city, get out and not look back. However Lot's wife disobeyed and looked back and she was turned into a pillar of salt. Disobedience carries consequences. The reality is that Lot's wife wasn’t interested in moving on with God. She simply wanted to return back to what she considered “normal” because it was comforting to her flesh. She failed to consider the outcome. How about you? What is restraining you? What is holding you back from leaving the comforts of your environment? What fear, doubt or worry is hindering you? Whatever it might be, I encourage you to surrender it to God and trust Him to provide everything you need to succeed both spiritually and physically. He will provide!God will take your “mess” and turn it into your greatest “message.” Like the Apostle Peter, He is waiting for you to take that first step out of the boat and on to the water. Whatever is holding you back, leave it behind. Don’t turn back! Don’t go back! Because the future with God is more rewarding than looking back to what you consider as “normal.”Just ask Lot’s wife.Be Worth Being,KevinSUBSCRIBE TO "OVER THE HUMP" DEVOTIONALKevin Burrell has worked in professional baseball as both a player and MLB scout for the past 40 years, and currently serves as an area scouting supervisor.
