The Unchangeable Appointment

It is appointed unto people once to die, and after that to face judgment,

Hebrews 9:27

There was a merchant in Bagdad who sent his servant to the market to buy provisions. A little while later the servant returned, white and trembling, and said, “Master, just now when I was in the marketplace I was jostled by a woman in the crowd, and when I turned I saw it was ‘Death’ that jostled me. She looked at me and made a threatening gesture, so would you please lend me your horse, and I will ride away from this city and avoid my pending fate. I will go to Samarra and there ‘Death’ will not find me.” The merchant lent him his horse, the servant mounted it, dug his spurs in its flanks and as fast as the horse could gallop he went. Then the merchant went down to the marketplace and he saw ‘Death’ standing in the crowd, he walked over and said, “why did you make a threatening gesture to my servant when you saw him this morning?” “That was not a threatening gesture, ‘Death’ said, it was only the start of a surprise. I was astonished to see him in Bagdad, for tonight, I have an appointment with him in Samarra.”We will all face death's door. There is no escaping it. Death is no respecter of persons. No amount of fame or fortune can stop it. For some, it’s quick and tragic, for others, it’s long and drawn out. Either way, death is a guarantee. The writer of Hebrews reminds us:“It is appointed unto people once to die, and after that the judgement.”There is no escaping death. The death angel comes for each one of us. We have an appointment that is unchangeable. We know not the time, the place, or hour. However, rest assured, death is coming. Your souls will live for eternity, so knowing without a shadow of a doubt where you’ll spend eternity is the most important decision you will ever make in your life here on earth.
