“For after David had done the will of God in his own generation, he died and was buried with his ancestors, and his body decayed.”
Acts 13:36
John Lennon and “The Beatles” released a 1965 album. In that album, was a song entitled “Nowhere Man.” The lyrics of that song say the following:
“He’s a real nowhere man. Sitting in his nowhere land. Making all his nowhere plans for nobody.
Doesn’t have a point of view. Knows not where he’s going to. Isn’t he a bit like you and me?”
Sadly, many who claim to be a follower of Jesus Christ approach life this same way. They have no plan. They don’t know where they are going. They have no point of view on God. They don’t know His word. They are winging it and simply wandering though life aimlessly, doing the same thing, the same way and expecting different results. They have no understanding of what the ‘will of God’ is for their lives.King David knew the will of God. The Apostle Paul reminds us, “For after David had done the will of God." Yes, David had his missteps and failures just as we do. However, David had a heart after God’s own heart (1 Samuel 13:14). David didn’t go through life winging it (and neither did Jesus). David lived with a purpose. He fulfilled the will of God in his life for his generation—and then he died.So how about you? Do you know the will of God, or are you aimlessly going through life everyday doing the same thing the same way and expecting different results? If so, that is the definition of insanity. Because if you aim at nothing you will hit it every time. If you don’t know the will of God , it is very simple and very clear. Here it is. Are you ready? It is found in two passages in the Bible, and it’s called the “Great Commandment' and the “Great Commission.” This is the ‘will of God’ for your life.
- The Great Commandment: “And you must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, all your mind, and all your strength.’ The second is equally important: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ No other commandment is greater than these.” Mark 12:30-31
- The Great Commission: “Therefore, go and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. Teach these new disciples to obey all the commands I have given you. And be sure of this: I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Matthew 28:19-20
Summation: “Love God, Love People, Live Sent” — “Go and Make Disciples.”That’s it! Nothing more and nothing less. Like David, live your life with the end in mind for the time you’ve been given on earth. Surrender your will to the will of God. Lock eyes with Jesus everyday and walk towards Him. Leverage your influence to build God’s kingdom.Don’t be a nowhere man.Love God! Love People!
