Worshiping God

When Michal, the daughter of Saul, looked down from her window. When she saw King David leaping and dancing before the Lord, she was filled with contempt for him.

2 Samuel 6:16

In one of the most visual displays of worship recorded in the Bible, King David danced “before the Lord with all his might” (2 Samuel 6:14). The occasion was the return of the Ark of the Covenant to Jerusalem. It was a day of rejoicing as David “and all Israel were bringing up the ark of the Lord with shouts and the sound of trumpets” (verse 15). Michal, David’s wife, and the daughter of Saul, watched and observed the way David was worshiping God, and she was...“Filled with Contempt.”Did you catch that? Have you ever been there? Have you ever been in church and you begin looking around, watching and observing ‘how’ people are worshiping God — or ‘if’ they were worshiping Him at all? And then, at that moment, you become “filled with contempt”? Allow me to remind you not to go there. Don’t do it. Allow your focus, your gaze, your full and complete worship and attention to be on Jesus and Jesus alone. Remember, “People judge by outward appearance, but God looks at the heart.” (1 Samuel 16:7). It is the heart of worship—and God is more concerned about the attitude of your heart than anything else. Take your eyes off others and lock eyes with Jesus. That brings great glory to God.David was undeterred by Michal’s criticism. In fact, he doubled down, telling her that it was the Lord he was dancing before, and he was quite willing to submit and lower himself in the Lord’s presence. David’s deep passion and exuberant worship are part of what make his psalms so relatable for us today. He expressed his adoration of God in a variety of ways: through his music, his writings, and his public displays of worship. Now, go and do likewise!Love God! Love Others!
