The person who drifts from common sense will end up in the company of the dead.
Proverbs 21:16
When I was a teenager growing up in Southern California, I use to go to the beach weekly. Often I would swim or body surf out in the shallow part of the water. On certain days, the lifeguards would set out two flags on the beach to stay between so that people wouldn’t drift too far down the shoreline. It looked easy until you were in the water. No matter which way I swam or body surfed, the tide pulled me down the shoreline—and in reality I had no idea how far I drifted until I looked back at the shore. There is a classic story about the wife who complained that her husband never sat next to her in the car anymore. One day as he was driving, he turned to her and said, “But, dear, I’ve never moved.” We’re the same way with God. Though sometimes we may feel far from Him, He never leaves us and He never moves. Instead, we allow ourselves to subtly drift away from Him.Such drifting in the Christian life rarely happens instantly. As we neglect our fellowship with Jesus Christ even for a short while, the drifting begins. Then continued neglect can lead to disaster. It happens so subtly. One day leads to one week, leads to one month, leads to one year. The next thing you know you no longer go to church, you stop fellowshipping with like-minded believers in the faith, and you’re in a dry and barren land living in sin and far away in your fellowship with God.If you’ve been drifting away from the Lord, I urge you to draw near to Him today. Don’t wait. Do it now. Confess your sin to Him. Make a conscious decision to drop anchor and begin connecting with God every day through reading His Word (the Bible), prayer, and fellowship with a godly accountability partner in the faith. I’m reminded of the old gospel hymn that says:“Prone to wander, Lord, I feel it, Prone to leave the God I love, Here’s my heart, O take and seal it. Seal it for Thy courts above.”Remember, if you don’t feel close to God . . . Guess who moved? Stop drifting. Lock eyes with Jesus and walk towards Him today. He is waiting with His arms open wide.Love God! Love People!
